An hours-long shelter-in-place order in Addison came to an end with one person in custody Thursday.
came to an end with one person in custody after police say a 911 call led to a standoff with shots fired at police. In that call, a man told dispatchers he"needed police to find his dogs" and if they did not he"would find people to do the police's job for them.
" The man then hung up and did not pick up returning calls, authorities said. As officers headed to the scene in the 200 block of East La Porte Drive, police said more 911 calls came in from residents saying a man was holding a bag, blocking the street with a white SUV and"spraying an unknown substance around the street." They also reported the man was lighting items on fire."Officers then began taking gun fire from the subject inside the house and officers took cover in the area," the department wrote in a release.Police were called from multiple jurisdictions, including the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, SWAT and the DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response & Investigations Team Task Force. Shortly after, police issued a shelter-in-place alert for residents on the block and urged people to avoid the area. An alert sent to residents' phones told those in the immediate area to"shelter in place immediately." Multiple schools were placed under a"secure" status, meaning classes continued but no one was allowed in or out of the buildings. At around 3:30 p.m., police said a person was taken into custody, but they continued to ask for the public to avoid the area as an investigation continued.
