One in five people around the world may have a health condition that puts them at a greater risk of severe Covid-19, according to new research.

The researchers also estimated the proportion of all people — with and without an underlying condition — who were at high risk of hospitalisation if infected with Covid-19. The likelihood of having one or more of the conditions listed on the current guidelines is similar between the men and women, but the authors think males are twice as likely as females to require hospitalisation if infected, an estimate which is backed up by recent studies which have found that men have a greater risk of severe Covid-19.
