Extreme rainfall and flash flooding hit the East Coast Sunday and Monday, causing nearly 20 rescues, one death and at least one area’s rain total to hit double digits as about 14 million Americans remain under flood warnings or watches.

a number of places saw more than six inches of rainfall on Sunday: West Point Military Academy in New York had 6.96 inches of rain in three hours, Reading, Pennsylvania, had 5.35 inches of rain— its wettest July day ever; and almost 10 inches of rain fell yesterday in the Hudson Valley of New York.

Storms aren’t expected to stop Monday, either: the National Weather Service has issued flood watches for parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Connecticut through Tuesday afternoon.Copyright 2023 The Associated Press.
