1 hospitalized after sofa in National City apartment catches fire; residents in 4 units displaced [Breaking]
A two-alarm fire in a National City apartment complex early Monday left one resident hospitalized and displaced residents from three other units that suffered water damage, a fire official said.
Firefighters responded to a ringing alarm around 3:40 a.m. at the building on National City Boulevard and East Eighth Street and found smoke pouring from a unit on the eighth floor. Officials quickly called for a second alarm to summon more personnel, said National City Battalion Chief Robert Hernandez. Firefighters from National City, Chula Vista and San Diego responded.Residents of the high-rise were evacuated as firefighters headed to the unit. Inside, they found a couch on fire and an injured resident, Hernandez said.
Video from OnScene TV showed firefighters carrying a woman from the building to an ambulance. She was rushed to the UCSD Burn Center to be treated, where she was later reported in stable condition. Three dogs lived in the apartment where the fire broke out. At least one of the dogs was given oxygen by firefighters, Hernandez said.Red Cross workers were assisting displaced residents.“The fire was contained to a sofa in the small apartment area and that was contained by the fire sprinkler system,” he said. He estimated it caused about $20,000 to $30,000 in damage.
