Jeffrey Haight fell into darkness.
Spider-Man has an expansive rogues' gallery that consists of scientific misfits, blue-collar thieves, and superpowered killers such as Venom. But one obscure villain from Peter Parker’s past has an origin that stands out from the rest and even rivals that of the first Venom, Eddie Brock.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Eddie Brock worked at New York’s Daily Globe as a journalist, hoping to become widely respected in his field. Upon investigating the costumed serial killer known as Sin-Eater, Brock gets a confession from Emil Gregg, who claims to be the man himself. Brock publishes several exposés and interviews about Gregg, but the confessor turns out to merely be the delusional neighbor of the real Sin-Eater.
Jeffrey Haight Is Venom Without the Symbiote Writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Staz Johnson’s miniseries Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Negative Exposure tells the story of a rival of Peter Parker who has a similar backstory to Eddie Brock’s. Daily Bugle photographer Jeffrey Haight strives to get one of his own pictures on the front page, but every new issue of the Daily Bugle instead features Peter Parker’s images of Spider-Man’s battles.
However, Eddie and Jeffrey's similarities aren't mere coincidence. Instead, both go to the root of Spider-Man's theme of responsibility. If either had taken responsibility for their lives and focused their efforts elsewhere instead of seeking revenge, they would have escaped their fates. Like Spider-Man when he refused to stop the burglar who killed his Uncle Ben, each has a moral lapse that results in unintended consequences.
Indeed, this is where Jeffrey Haight and Eddie Brock's paths diverge. The difference that makes Jeffrey Haight an even darker reflection of Eddie Brock is that he holds no remorse for his crimes and has remained selfish and hateful. Meanwhile, Venom has made up for his villainous acts and has since become a hero in his own right alongside Spider-Man, literally following Peter Parker's example and earning his redemption - meanwhile, Jeffrey Haight rots in a cell.
