Alien 3 could have been an even worse movie
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Alien 3 nearly ruined the Alien franchise with one of its worst movies, but it would’ve turned out even worse if the studio had chosen to use an earlier script. There were a few different incarnations of Alien 3 before 20th Century Fox finally settled on one. William Gibson wrote a script, David Twohy wrote a script, Walter Hill and David Giler wrote a script, and Vincent Ward pitched a story set on a wooden planet.
A screenplay written by Near Dark’s Eric Red – titled Alien III on the script’s cover page and also known as Alien World during its development – had an even more controversial opening than the final film. The threequel opened with the off-screen deaths of both Hicks and Newt, instantly undoing the satisfying conclusion of the previous film, Aliens. But Red’s script opened with something even more egregious.
Then, Red’s script pivots to a brand-new protagonist, a Marine named Sam Smith, who uncovers sinister military experiments on the Xenovirus. This script is full of wild ideas that never would’ve worked on-screen. Sam’s mother fought a xenomorph with a chainsaw. There was a farm full of xenomorph-chicken hybrids . Red’s Alien III would’ve been the goriest Alien movie ever made, but fans of the franchise probably wouldn’t be willing to overlook the opening death of Ripley.
Why Killing Ripley Would Have Been Even Worse For Alien Killing Hicks and Newt off-screen was bad enough in the finished version of Alien 3, but killing Ripley along with them – as Red’s script called for – would’ve been even worse. The xenomorphs aren’t the stars of this franchise; Ripley is the star. She’s the iconic heroine that fans have been following since the beginning. Alien 3 did kill off Ripley, but not until the end when she makes a conscious sacrifice.
