Before Alan Ritchson made the character his own, Tom Cruise played Jack Reacher in a couple of theatrical movies. In fact, the first Jack Reacher movie served as something of an audition for director Christopher McQuarrie, who'd go on to helm four Mission: Impossible films for Cruise.
The latest installment, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, has now overtaken Jack Reacher at the global box office, after just around a week in theaters. Released in 2012, Jack Reacher concluded its theatrical run with around $217 million globally, against a reported budget of $60 million. The Final Reckoning has generated $222 million so far, with around $95 million of that total coming from domestic theaters. As we speak, the film is passing the coveted $100 million mark domestically. But The Final Reckoning has a long road ahead of it. Unlike Jack Reacher, which had a relatively modest budget for an action movie starring Cruise, The Final Reckoning comes with a reported price tag of $400 million. Going by the rule of thumb, it would need to gross $800 million worldwide — or, in other words, become the franchise's top-grossing installment — in order to break even. The film's budget ballooned due to pandemic-induced delays and strike-related shutdowns. Plus, Cruise insists on filming incredible sequences in-camera, which not only poses a challenge logistically, but also inflates production costs. His fascination with action could also be seen in Jack Reacher, which remains memorable for a stand-out car chase sequence that Cruise performed himself. The movie holds a"fresh" 64% Rotten Tomatoes score. It was followed by a sequel, titled Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which made around $160 million worldwide against a reported budget of $90 million. The character was rebooted for streaming with Ritchson at the center. Lee Child, who wrote the books upon which the films were based, was rather dissatisfied by Cruise's casting; in the books, Reacher is a towering man with an imposing physical presence. 'The Final Reckoning' Was Marketed As the Series' Conclusion Close Reacher, the show, does incredibly well for Prime Video. It recently wrapped up its third season, and is all set to get a spin-off, titled Neagley. Meanwhile, The Final Reckoning is set to pass the $300 million milestone at the worldwide box office this week. The movie has been marketed as the final chapter in the storied action franchise, but it would be wise to take this information with a grain of salt. The film holds an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, and an even better 89% audience score on the aggregator website.
