DOTHAN, Ala. - A new private school is coming to Dothan this fall with a tuition of $500 a year. For some families, it will be free.
The halls of the former Montana Magnet School, which closed in 2019, will be filled with students again starting in August. Primer, a K-8 private school, is offering private education without the typical private school price tag. Tuition is $500 per year, and some families can attend free with a state scholarship.
“We are coming here to serve folks that maybe cannot afford private schools in other situations. So we want to make private school affordable for everybody,” said Stephen Bridgers, Primer’s general manager. What sets Primer apart is its approach to education. Instead of one pace for every student, Primer uses small group learning and technology to let each child move at their own speed.
“When a public school is serving a large number of kids or a lot of other private schools, you have one pace that’s set that everybody needs to get on board with. Here at Primer, through utilizing our small group learning and utilizing technology and some of our learning apps, we’re allowing each of our students to kind of work at their own pace and really succeed,” Bridgers said.
“It’s a really neat piece of technology we have that lives in all of our parents’ phones so that they have a really good insight into how their kid’s doing on a day-to-day basis,” Bridgers said. Primer is not new to Alabama. The Dothan campus will be its fourth location, joining campuses in Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery.
“For Dothan, it was kind of just looking at different communities across the state where we thought parents maybe could appreciate another school choice option,” Bridgers said. “We’re excited to have hopefully multiple generations of Dothan families come through here,” Bridgers said.
