Authorities identify man arrested in Fairbanks police presence who threatened others with gun, troopers say

A 28-year-old man who authorities say pointed an assault-style rifle at another person during a confrontation Wednesday night in Fairbanks has been arrested for robbery and kidnapping, among other charges.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A 28-year-old man who authorities say pointed an assault-style rifle at another person and threatened to “shoot their kneecaps out” during a confrontation Wednesday night in Fairbanks has been arrested for robbery and kidnapping, among other charges.

Around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday night, troopers and Fairbanks police responded to an anonymous report of a robbery at the location. An investigation of that report resulted in multiple officers arriving at the residence, where Malyk had shown up armed and threatened to shoot those inside the building. During the investigation, law enforcement units were armed with rifles and shields but did not enter the building until four people had calmly exited and were placed in vehicles.

In the affidavit, Trooper Cody Royer stated that Malyk surrendered to officers as they instructed three others inside the residence to leave the building with their hands up. In the account of events, one of the three people in the residence stated that Malyk “had pointed a firearm” at them and threatened to shoot them “in the legs.

” In an interview with another person involved, the witness explained that they were picked up near Street Sounds on South Cushman Street. The witness said another person had accidentally taken Malyk’s key fob and when they returned to the residence, an argument ensued. One witness told police that during the course of the argument, Malyk had threatened to shoot up their car.

One witness said they went inside the residence as Malyk and another person continued to argue outside, but Malyk came inside and began yelling at them to come downstairs. The two of them were both upstairs at the time, according to their account of events and the third person “was yelling that not coming downstairs. ” By this time, the argument had turned to possessions of Malyk’s that he claimed another person had.

As this went on, a witness claims to have heard one of the people saying “don’t point the gun at me, don’t shoot me. ” That witness did not see Malyk point a gun at Taylor during the argument, according to the affidavit, but had seen Malyk wield an AR-15 style rifle outside the house.

In the interview with police, they also told officers that Malyk instructed them to grab “all of his valuables and bring them downstairs, or he was going to shoot Luke’s kneecap out. ” Trooper Royer’s report said this was confirmed to officers with a video in which the witness can be heard saying “don’t f****** point your gun at me. ” The firearm in question was later discovered when officers contacted another individual.

During the traffic stop at a Speedway gas station on College Road, that person consented to a vehicle search where an AR style rifle with an 11.5 inch barrel, classified as a short-barreled rifle under theThe person told officers he had gone to the residence on Phillips Field Road because one of the witnesses told them they “felt uncomfortable. ” According to one of the witnesses at the home, they ran out of the house with a rifle and put it in the back of the car.

After being taken to the Alaska State Trooper post in Fairbanks, Malyk told officers he arrived at the residence with the rifle in the trunk of the car. He also told officers he was at the residence to determine the status of a pistol he was supposed to be given.

Charging documents state that Malyk informed troopers that he wanted to be compensated for the missing pistol and during the argument, Malyk pointed the SBR at one of the people and told them that he could “shoot him in knees. ” Charging documents also state that Malyk told law enforcement that he consumed about two grams of meth before surrendering to authorities. Malyk was arrested and remanded to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.
