Some packages of seasoned croutons sold at Kroger are being recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination.

The recall applies to certain lots of Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons, which were sold in 5-ounce pouches and have a UPC number of 0 11110 81353 4.

They have best if used by dates ranging from February 17, 2027, to April 7, 2027. The croutons were distributed between March 7 and April 7 to Kroger stores in 17 states. Those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The Food and Drug Administration says the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution due to potential Salmonella contamination associated with milk power used as an ingredient in the croutons’ seasoning. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the FDA. Customers can return the croutons or contact Sugar Foods LLC for a refund.

The company can be reached at 240-6676 seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
