High school freshman in Butler county wins statewide turkey hunting photo contest

A freshman at McKenzie High School won the 14th annual Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association Big Gobbler Photo Contest after a five-hour hunt in Butler County.

) - A freshman at McKenzie High School won the 14th annual Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association Big Gobbler Photo Contest after a five-hour hunt in Butler County .

Weston Lowery harvested a tom with 1-inch spurs and an 11½-inch beard on March 26, the second day of Alabama’s 2026 wild turkey season. He entered the woods around 5 a.m. and shot the bird at 10:30 a.m. “I was chasing him all morning,” Lowery said.

“I was out there about 5 in the morning and finally got him about 10:30. ”“I was getting ready to leave and the next thing I know, he’s 10 yards behind me,” Lowery said.

“I don’t know why he didn’t see me. ” Lowery took the prize gobbler down with a Remington 12-gauge shotgun. His mom snapped a photo of the proud hunter with his catch and submitted it to the contest. Their entry received over 2,200 online votes, more than double the second-place entry.

Weston Lowery, a student at McKenzie High School in Butler County, received the most online votes to win the 2026 Big Gobbler Photo Contest. Lowery is being awarded includes a $100 gift card, a Buckmasters prize pack, a book about the Black Belt region, and much more.

“It’s especially gratifying to know that a teenager won this year’s contest, because young hunters will become the conservation leaders in the future,” said Pam Swanner, ALBBAA director. Fischer Blake Evans, 8, of Barbour County, finished second with a photo of his first turkey harvest.
