A 13-year-old who was arrested for allegedly shooting another student on a playground at a King County elementary school was released from juvenile detention.

A 13-year-old boy who was arrested for allegedly shooting another student on a playground at a south King County elementary school was released to his family after being booked into juvenile detention .

While details of the shooting are limited, deputies from the King County Sheriff’s Office said they were dealing with an unrelated call near the school when a student approached them saying he’d been shot. The deputies quickly arrested a 13-year-old suspect while the victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. While the sheriff’s office said there was "never a threat to the public," parents of students at Lakeland Elementary School are questioning why the school wasn’t put on lockdown. “Once they knew that something happened on school grounds, they should have locked down the school,” parent Esperanza Torres told KOMO News. “Once they knew something had happened there, regardless of whether it was a stabbing, a shooting, whatever. They shouldn’t have allowed my daughter or any kids to go home by themselves.” Torres said her daughter and other students walked off campus approximately 30 minutes after the shooting. “They were allowed to walk through initially a crime scene, so I am upset about that,” Torres said. “Obviously, we saw were searching for something. Were they looking for the weapon? What were they looking for?” In a statement to KOMO News Thursday, the Federal Way School District said a lockdown was not initiated at Lakeland Elementary School due to the instruction of law enforcement. “Our protocols and standard operating procedures are used district wide, and staff are trained to follow these protocols, which include following the directives of our law enforcement officers when they are on or near our campus attending to a safety related matter,” the statement from the district says. “In this situation, the school followed the directives of the deputies on the scene who did not initiate a lockdown and had the most reliable and complete information at the time.” The district said no Lakeland students or staff saw or heard anything that would call for a lockdown. “It wasn’t until after the incident occurred, the scene had been secured, and the youth was in custody, that we received limited information from King County Sheriff’s officers. At no point did law enforcement direct the school to go into a lockdown as they had secured the scene and believed there was no immediate threat to the school or the students. Again, we want to emphasize that at all times, the information that law enforcement provided was that there was no active threat to the school or students, and that it was safe to dismiss students. We rely on our law enforcement officers that have the most current and up to date information to help ensure the safety of our staff and students.” The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office told KOMO News charges may be filed in the shooting case on Friday.
