SAN ANTONIO – At any point in time, there are about around 3,400 people experiencing homeless in San Antonio .Now, local leaders are working with local faith-based organizations to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness.

presented a special screening of a new documentary called Americans with No Address to more than a hundred people from different faith-based organizations in our area. The Congregational Collective is part of the H.E. Butt Foundation and exists to equip congregations to become community leaders in mental health and wellness by partnering to build support systems, networks and ministry tools that include educational resources, training, and a network of relationships. CEO and President David Rogers said their hope was to give everyone an in-depth look at the root causes of homelessness and show the key role mental health plays -- empowering them to help make a change. "The Church, if it's a place where people are going, shouldn't the church be a leader in dealing with and helping people and families deal with mental health and wellness,” Rogers said.Kim Jeffries, the president and CEO of Haven for Hope, says showing people the "faces of homelessness" and what it really is can help change their perspective. "When more people are aware of that, they don't look away from the problem, they step into it and I think that is how screenings of this documentary can help,” Jeffries said. The city also had a representative there in Mark Carmona, the chief housing officer for San Antonio. He said, "You might walk by someone and think this person just needs to get a job, this person just needs to stop drinking. But once people begin to understand the depth of mental health, the depth of substance abuse, and what that does. You can't explain it, but it happens, and I think this creates new frames for people in which to think about it."Stay Connected
