, a company that provides busing operations for school districts, provided the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District school board with an update on their staffing and services.
During a school board meeting, Durham School Services presented their latest updates on employment and safety, both showing a stable if not improving situation. According to the company’s Northwest Regional Manager, Will Zimmerman, their services for the FNSBSD are growing and their bus driver employment has reached an all time high since being awarded a contract with the school district. The total currently comes in at 127 bus drivers.
Zimmerman said that having all of those drivers from the Fairbanks area, helps provide a more stable service for students. This is because the students will have more consistent drivers, allowing the students and drivers to have a better relationship which can be more impactful than many people consider. Having local drivers also helps the company deal with the extreme conditions faced in the school district.
On the topic of maintenance and vehicle inspection, the Fairbanks location for the company has undergone two inspections this year. “The first one yielded a 97.5% first time pass for all buses,” Zimmerman said. “The 1.5% that did not pass were able to be fixed immediately that day and did not miss route service.” Similar results were recorded for their second inspection.
