Before following a path into the medical field, San Antonio defensive tackle Prince Emili is determined to play football for as long as he can.
For San Antonio Brahmas defensive tackle Prince Emili , the path through life after football will hinge on timing, but he at least knows he has options. Earning a business degree with a concentration in healthcare management while also completing the pre-med requirements at Ivy League university Penn , Emili has weighed enrolling in medical school, understanding he’d be making a yearslong commitment between further education and time in residence.
Should the 25-year-old have many seasons of football still ahead before thinking about his next career move, he said he’d probably look at a less time-consuming path into his next field, perhaps as a doctor of physical therapy. Joining the Brahmas for his first taste of spring football this year, Emili became the anchor in the middle of the defensive line unit, helping the team to a spot in the UFL Championship game against the Birmingham Stallions at 4 p.m. Sunday in St. Louis. “Football only comes once,” Emili said. “As soon as you hang the cleats up or you reach a certain age, you can’t even play pickup football the way you can play soccer with your friends, or basketball. I want to give this its fair go, until it’s done.” Emili knows he wants to end up in healthcare in one way or another, as his father works as a doctor and his mother is a nurse. The son of Nigerian immigrants, Emili said his family always set education as a primary focus, and he figured he had no choice but to pursue one of the Ivy League offers after his time at Clarkstown North High School in New York. Keeping up with the academic demands of both a business degree and the medical track required plenty of summer courses, Emili said, and he also emerged as an on-field standout, earning first-team All-Ivy honors his final two years. He played in two games with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2022, then joined the New Orleans Saints' practice squad late that year, remaining with the team until his release in August. He signed with the Brahmas in December and has been a fixture this season, totaling 23 tackles and three sacks during the regular season. He delivered his most productive game of the year in last week’s playoff matchup with St. Louis, notching five tackles with a pair of sacks. “Prince has been big time for us all season,” San Antonio defensive coordinator Will Reed said. “Early on, I think there were one or two games where he didn’t play as well as he wanted to, and the great thing about Prince has always been that if he didn’t play as well as he wanted, the next week, he’s going to be lights out.” Emili said he believed he started slow with the Brahmas before coaches began to unlock his versatility, showcasing his athleticism by moving him through different positions along the defensive line. RELATED: QB Chase Garbers shows resilience in leading Brahmas to UFL Championship Game Listed at 6-foot-1 and 295 pounds, Emili understands the battles in the trenches are often more about brute force than intellect, but he still tries to find a role in dissecting the opposing offense and relaying calls through the defense. “Defensive tackle definitely is not as cerebral as playing middle linebacker or safety,” Emili said. “But you can pick up on some keys that allow you to play just a little bit faster, and that helps you make the difference for your team.” San Antonio’s defense will be tested mentally this week by the need to prepare for two quarterbacks, as Birmingham could look to either Adrian Martinez or Matt Corral. Martinez, the UFL MVP, threw for 1,750 yards with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions this year, while also leading the league in rushing at 528 yards with three scores. But with Birmingham trailing 18-12 with about five minutes to play in the third quarter of last week’s USFL championship game, the Stallions turned to Corral, who threw an interception on his first series but then led a pair of touchdown drives to help fuel a 31-18 win. Stallions coach Skip Holtz announced this week that Martinez will remain the starter for Sunday’s championship game, adding that Birmingham is prepared to turn to Corral should the need arise. Reed said he expects the Stallions’ offensive scheme will be similar under either signal-caller, but he added that each quarterback has certain “tells” the defense needs to recognize. “If they change quarterbacks, do we really have to have a major overhaul in what we do? No,” Reed said. “But you better have a wrinkle or two, to know what it is that you have to do, because they are two different guys.”
