Mission San José and a site in the Rio Grande Valley were among 19 new locations named as part of a national commemorative network.
Mission San José has been added to the National Park Service ’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, along with 18 other U.S. sites, including one in the Rio Grande Valley . The park service’s director, Chuck Sams , announced the additions Monday at the mission. The network chronicles experiences of people who escaped slavery and those who supported them. The listing for Mission San José “commemorates an 1833 defense of Mexico ’s anti-slavery laws,” the NPS said.
Also added to the network were four sites in Missouri, two in Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania and one in Florida, Georgia and Indiana. “The National Park Service is committed to sharing a fuller and more inclusive account of our nation’s history, a history that is not complete until all voices are represented,” Sams said.
