A man has been charged with manslaughter after a 1-year-oldwas found dead in a vehicle, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office’s Violent Crimes Unit (VCU).
) - A man has been charged with manslaughter after a 1-year-old was found dead in a vehicle, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office’s Violent Crime s Unit .
Capt. Jack Kennedy with the VCU said around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, Brookwood Police, Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Office deputy paramedics, Brookwood Fire and Northstar Ambulance all responded to a residence in the 11000 block of Stone Ridge Court in Brookwood. Kennedy said family had reported a 1-year-old was dead inside a vehicle, still strapped into a car seat.
The VCU took over the investigation and determined that the child had been solely in the care of their father all day. The father, identified as 30-year-old Logan Keith Chewning, admitted that he had been drinking throughout the day at different times, leaving the residence at one point to buy more alcohol. Chewning reportedly told authorities that he believed the child had been sleeping in a crib and that he must have accidentally left the child inside the vehicle.
According to Kennedy, the initial investigation shows the child was left in the vehicle for an extended amount of time. The exact cause of the child’s death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Kennedy.
