An exclusive look at how AI startup Coactive scored $10.4 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer to analyze unstructured visual content

Media and consumer retail customers can flag inappropriate content or search through visual data.On a Thursday afternoon, Cody Coleman told me that he was looking forward to a rare weekend vacation to Hawaii with an unexpected guest — his high school trigonometry teacher.

Although the mere memory of high school trigonometry may be enough to trigger cold sweats for some, for Coleman, his high school math teacher served as his"unofficial adopted mom," he told Insider, a mentor who paid for driving lessons, took him to the orthodontist, and encouraged him to pursue his interest in computers following a tough and impoverished upbringing that began with his birth in prison,Now, there's a lot for him and his childhood teacher to celebrate — Coleman's AI startup Coactive, which he cofounded alongside William Gaviria Rojas to help companies glean insights from their unstructured image and video data, has closed a $10.4 million Series A round, co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer Venture Partners. With the rise of e-Commerce and creator platforms, visual content has exploded, and with the increasing usage of generative AI, it'll only become easier for consumers to create their own video and image content, Coleman told Insider. However, many companies struggle with organizing and analyzing this data, as its attributes are often trapped in its content and are difficult to parse out. Coactive tackles this problem by"enabling companies to generate structure for their unstructured data and bring it into the world of data tools" and search, Coleman said. The startup largely serves media and consumer retail companies through its closed beta, Coleman told Insider. Customers in the media space use Coactive's software to automatically annotate or flag inappropriate content, while consumer retail companies can use the technology to organize and search large swathes of photos or videos, he added. Competitors in this space have been somewhat limited due to shortfalls in artificial intelligence technology, Coleman said. But with the recent advancements in AI, a batch of startups are taking on the problem of analyzing and creating unstructured data by focusing on different types of content like text, image, or audio, like audio transcription and analytics startup Deepgram; different industries like film-centric generative AI startup RunwayML; or on infrastructure, like vector database Pinecone. However, Coleman recognizes that many companies still lack robust machine learning teams, so his focus for Coactive is simplifying the visual content analytics process to remove the need for multiple tools and"meeting companies where they're at right now with their existing data teams," he told Insider.Subscribe to push notifications
