The public will even be able to admire some of the art pieces at the Obama Presidential Center for free.
Thursday, May 21, 2026 10:44PMAn 83-foot-high glass mural by Julie Meretu on the North Side of the Obama Presidential Center tower can't be missed if you look up.
It's called "Uprising of the Sun" inspired by President Obama's remarks on the 50th anniversary of the marches from Selma to Montgomery.
"Bending the Arc" by Martin Puryear references Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
""It's a dream come true in don't know if I''ll ever be quite settled about this opportunity," artist Tyanna Buie said. She recalls being a college student in the Bud Billiken Parade with her youth church group to support a man then running for senate: Barack Obama.
"We turn around and he was like 'I want to thank you for being here' and we were like 'what? oh this is the person to the float,'" Buie recalled. "And then he wins and we were just in that parade! This is the guy.
"Visitors will also see "This Land, Shared Sky," an installation from Marie Watt and Nick Cave as they enter the tower. Before going to the museum, Mark Bradford's three-story piece hangs on a west wall "City of the Big Shoulders". In the Skyroom, visitors walk beneath Idris Khan's "Sky of Hope" on the conical ceiling with words of inspiration. She hopes it will inspire visitors leaving the museum to take action.
Her work as an educator has taken her most recently to the Rhode Island School of Design. Buie looks forward to returning when the center opens to see people viewing her work and to be in the company of some of America's most acclaimed artists. The center opens on Juneteenth.
