Alvin ISD representatives said Marek and Wilder Elementary Schools will be closed for the rest of the school year after storms caused extensive damage.
Wednesday, May 20, 2026 10:38PMAlvin Independent School District representatives said two elementary schools will be closed for the rest of the school year after rain leaked inside the school buildings.
The superintendent said there is extensive damage at both Mary Marek and Laura Ingalls Wilder Elementary Schools. Superintendent Carol Nelson said some students are bummed because it means they won't get their fifth-grade celebrations, as the district works to figure out how much it will cost to repair the damage. Alvin ISD representatives said repairs have started, as crews have been on the roof for much of the day.
At this point, the communications team at Alvin ISD said they estimate the repairs will cost thousands of dollars. Meantime, school administrators are working to devise a plan B to celebrate the fifth graders and still host their awards ceremony at the junior high school next to Marek Elementary.
"Lots of water damage," Nelson said. "Friday is the last day, so kids are disappointed because it's awards and things of that nature. " Superintendent Nelson says Marek Elementary has damage to the gym, cafeteria, and library. She added that Wilder Elementary has water damage in several places, including some classrooms.
"We feel like a couple of weeks ago, there was hail out here in the Pearland area. We feel like there may have been some damage, and with these widespread showers and rain coming through, the roof has now been penetrated," said Superintendent Nelson.
"We can't control Mother Nature. " The district said Wednesday and Thursday were supposed to see fifth-grade award ceremonies, and a senior walk-through was scheduled for Thursday as well. School administrators said they are now scrambling to do everything possible to still celebrate the end of the school year.
