Two people have died in separate heat-related deaths amid record-breaking temps in the Philadelphia region this week.

LEHIGH COUNTY, Pa. -- Two people have died in separate heat-related deaths amid record-breaking temperatures in the Philadelphia region this week. A 78-year-old man from Washington Township died on Tuesday after being exposed to extreme heat conditions at his home, according to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office & Forensic Center.

A 76-year-old man from Allentown also died on Tuesday due to the extreme heat, the coroner's office said.

"Although I am withholding the names of these decedents out of respect for their families and loved ones, I believe the public should be aware that two heat-related deaths have occurred in our community. By sharing this information, my hope is to raise awareness of the dangers associated with extreme heat and encourage residents to take preventative measures that may help save lives during the upcoming summer months," Lehigh County coroner Daniel Buglio said.after experiencing three consecutive days of excessive heat and humidity.

The stretch of high temperatures marks the first heat wave of the season and the earliest the region has experienced such prolonged heat since 2017. The extreme heat means people need to continue to stay hydrated and limit time outside.

"I encourage everyone to remain mindful of the dangers associated with extreme heat. Each year, heat-related illnesses and deaths occur, some of which are preventable," Buglio said, while also reminding people to check in on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors.

"A simple phone call, visit, or welfare check can make a significant difference and may save a life," he said. The heat is expected to break midweek when a strong cold front brings showers and a few storms on Wednesday evening. Copyright © 2026 WPVI-TV. All Rights Reserved.
